Value of the Humble Re.1

In this day and age, when ATMs dispense only Rs. 500 & 1000 bills (we Indians call it ‘Notes’), it is only natural for us to have them neatly placed into our wallets, and ensure they don’t crumple or tear. But how often, when we get a one or two rupee coin as change, nonchalantly put it inside one of those pockets in the wallet that we hardly use! Many a time, we don’t even take the change from a cab or a rickshaw driver. And that’s not always because we were in a charitable mood, but more often that not, it’s ‘cause we didn’t value that humble rupee.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we get to know the true value of this one rupee coin in the oddest of hours. I’m pretty sure, like me, you’ve faced this scenario as well, when you caught a rickshaw/cab at an odd hour, and very soon realized that you have only those heavy bills (notes) in your wallet. You know the rickshaw driver will use some choicest words if you hand him a 500 or a 1000 Rupees bill, and you begin to search your bag and wallet like crazy. At times like these, I have found those little one and two Rupee coins that I had put away in some corner of my bag, handy. Digging out each coin one by one, you’re relieved when you know you have just about enough to satisfy the Rick fare. And that relief is doubled when you find that final One Rupee coin to accurately round up the fare! It’s at times like these that realize how valuable are these little silver-coated metals, which we otherwise put away.

So, what am I trying to say from all this? Just a simple spiritual lesson: Do not ignore those little coins that God has placed under our care. Those ‘little’ sheep that we think are not of much value when they come into our lives. They may not have the greatest abilities or gifts from the perspective of our fleshy eyes. Like the 500/1000 Rupees bills, they may not be able to do some big things or get involved in things we consider precious. They may not preach, teach or lead worship powerfully. They may not be able to give you too much of financial assistance either. But in the right time, they will come out of those hidden pockets to assist you just when you are in need! They will be your go-to men and women, boys and girls, when the bigger bills will stay in the wallet. What they do may not be huge! They won’t be your eye-grabbing, head-turning, breath-taking individuals, but they’ll lend themselves entirely, even to their last bit, when the going gets tough, or when we find ourselves in tricky situations.

Every single one of them has immense potential, and a huge value, if only we tap into them and use them wisely. It’s important for us not to throw them away, counting them worthless, but encourage and preserve them, for in due time, their true value will be realized.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:24-25

And this holds true, not just for servant-leaders, but also for every single individual who is a child of God, for certain people are a part of our lives so we can encourage, inspire and stir them up for greater things! For that is why God has placed them in our wallets!
